Trick or Treat!

We were all very excited about trick or treating this year.  We weren’t sure what to expect having just moved to a country that really doesn’t recognize Halloween as a holiday.  No school Halloween parties, parades or crafts, nobody wearing Halloween clothes or black fingernail polish, very few Halloween decorations at houses, and no set trick or treat times.  We headed out to a nearby street around 5:30, though I did hear some people started as early as 3:30!  Though as soon as it is dark here, that’s definitely the sign that it’s over…so different in the States!  Some of the kids in Alaina’s class were going trick or treating for the first time!  It is catching on here in Australia, slowly but surely!  They say it’s only started to get big in the last 5 years, so we were happy to get to go out and have fun!

Here are the girls all ready for a fun night out!

Hallie was loving it!  She knew just what to do and was definitely on a mission to have people keep giving her candy!

IMG_5751               She loved it and was always ready with her bag!

The girls were totally unfazed by the hand grabbing them as they searched for the candy they wanted.

Black cat crossed our path but we had no bad luck!

This was the very hilly street that people had recommended we go to as it would be hoppin’.  There were a ton of trick or treaters, but honestly not that many houses passing out candy…maybe every 4th or 5th house on average.

There were definitely a few houses that went all out with their decorations and we were very excited to see them!

There was some great decorations!

Green cordial that was being passed out as a treat here.  The girls were thrilled!

After we exhausted this street, we headed back to our neighborhood and had even more fun!

We ran into 3 of Alaina’s classmates.  Here is Alaina with her friend, Belle.

Alaina saw a few school friends along the way. Alaina & Belle

This house was our favorite by far.  They went all out in their decorations and everyone seemed to love it!

Hallie was so cute saying "ellphant" when you asked her what she was.  Cutest elephant ever-we heard enough comments to know I must be true!

The girls had a blast! This was our loot from a couple hours out...a lot less than in the States…and you definitely wouldn't see unwrapped candy given out!  Oh, and Mars Bars here taste like Milky Way and Milky Way tastes like chocolate 3 Musketeers...fooled me!

Happy Halloween from the Watson girls!

One more picture thrown in here from earlier in the day.  Alaina had a mufti day at school which meant a non-uniform day.  Here she is with Kyla in front of the school’s painted rhino that was part of a fund-raising campaign.

Pumpkin Carving!

So we debated whether or not we should buy a pumpkin this year as they were SO expensive here!  After awhile, we decided we would buy one so they could still have the joy that comes when pulling out those pumpkin guts and eating the cooked seeds later as well as carving a silly face into the side.  So, we bought this $14 pumpkin from Costco.  Back home, this smallish pumpkin would have cost us around $2.  This was the cheapest one we found here in NSW too.  I saw one not much bigger than this for sale at a fruit/veg market for $30!  We made do with the 1 and the girls had a blast.  $14 well spent!!

Since we just had one pumpkin, Alaina and Kyla each got to carve one side of it!  We made it work and they were quite pleased!
