We weren’t exactly sure of our plans for this day. We had passed on going to Seal Bay the day before and had contemplated getting an earlier ferry to the mainland, but the only time left wasn’t going to work for us. So we debated going further west to Stoke’s Bay, know for it’s beautiful beach, going back to check out Seal Bay or just taking a slower drive back to the ferry and stopping a couple times along the way. In the end, we decided to splurge a little and go back to Seal Bay.
Seal Bay is the home of the third largest Australian sea lion colony in Australia. The Australian sea lion is one of the rarest species in the world and are only found in South Australia and Western Australia. Adult females at Seal Bay will travel to sea and away from their pups for three days at a time, returning ashore to feed pups and rest between trips, which explains why we see so many of them lounging around. They will dive under water anywhere up to 1,200 times over a three day trip, rarely resting. They lifespan is between 17 and 25 years
We had heard it was best to spend the extra money to do a guided tour out onto the beach versus just the self-guided boardwalk, so after checking out the view from the lookout, we met up with our group.
The guide told us that these dirt paths were made by the seals coming further up the shore.
As we got out on the beach, we saw this pup making his way toward the water…so cute!
We enjoyed walking along the beach with our group and seeing the seals either lounging around on the beach, getting into fights with other seals, spending time with their babies, and preparing to head back out to sea.
I thought these next 2 pictures were funny as 2 of them were fighting, one started running with the other chasing and then the chaser just gave up….must have thought, I’m really tired, this is not worth it.
We left Seal Bay and headed back to Penneshaw to catch our afternoon ferry back to the mainland. We were a bit early, so I explored the area overlooking the Investigator Straight.
Ready to head to Adelaide!
We made it to our place in Adelaide and met up with Brian’s aunt & uncle who live in Port Lincoln, South Australia (about a 7 hour drive from Adelaide). They came to Adelaide to meet up with us and we worked out to stay at the same caravan park. This was our tiny cabin…though the girls were absolutely thrilled to have a triple bunk and their own windows!
Once we unpacked, we all walked to dinner at the Surf Life Saving Club. After placing our order, the girl went to the nearby playground until dinner was ready.
The kids played after dinner at our caravan park playground before it was time for bed.
Brian and I were thrilled when Aunt Peggy & Uncle Cliff offered to sit with the girls so that we could go out for a bit. So, we did the beach walk to town where they were having a small carnival and we grabbed a yummy ice cream treat to enjoy on our walk back.
And this is how we found the girls upon our return…
Alaina, our oldest…the proper and put together side sleeper
Kyla, our middle…the anything goes, full of life and you get what you get sleeper
Hallie, our youngest….the relaxed, gave it her all today sleeper
