On our first full day in the Adelaide area, we decided to drive with Uncle Cliff & Aunt Peggy to the Barossa Valley, about an hour away. Along the way, we stopped to look at this old boat that was being restored. The City of Adelaide brought 889 passengers from Britain to Adelaide between 1864 and 1886, along with thousands of tons of cargo. The only other surviving wooden clipper ship is London's Cutty Sark, which was commissioned in 1870. This purpose-built migrant transporter played a vital role in the development of South Australia.
Once in the Barossa Valley, we stopped at a park that featured this big, old steam train.
We continued on to the town of Angaston, where we went for a walk through town and found a lovely café to take away lunch and supposedly the best vanilla slice in the world! We had a picnic in the park followed by a lot of fun on the playground.
Hallie is getting so much more daring on all the different climbing structures.
We couldn’t leave the Barossa Valley without visiting a winery! Brian and I thoroughly enjoyed our time of wine tasting as the Cliff & Peggy played with the girls!
We liked this way of swirling the wine.
Here we are recreating a picture from when Hallie was just 2 months old. Didn’t have the original to compare to, but thought it would be funny either way.
On our way back to Semaphore (where we were staying), we stopped at the Barossa Reservoir in Gawler to check out the Whispering Wall. At the time of its completion in 1902, Barossa reservoir was not only the first arch dam in South Australia but the highest in Australia. The dam has surprising acoustic properties. Sounds at one end of the dam can be clearly heard at the other end. Straight line sound waves reflect obliquely off the wall as they travel 140 meters (459 ft) to the other end.
I had fun singing a chatting to the girls from the other end. Unbelievable how clear the sound was!
Uncle Cliff treated the girls to some ice cream before heading back to the caravan park. He knows how to win points with these girls!
Once back, the girls and Daddy got their swimsuits on for some fun in the pools. I think Daddy was excited that he finally gets to have fun throwing the girls in the pool.
The girls got to do fun cartwheels throws with Daddy!
After we cleaned up, we went to a nearby town, Glenelg for a pizza/pasta dinner.
