Our first stop was for lunch at this small café in Bowning, called the Rollonin Café. It was done up to look like a pioneer slab hut, with the waitresses dressed in mob caps and turn-of-the-century clothes. They had animals in the paddock next door (goats, sheep, horses), that the kids could pat.
Our second stop was in Holbrook for some sweet treats and a look around the HMAS Otway Submarine.
This is a one fifth scale model of the B11 submarine commanded by Lt. Holbrook during WWI. Holbrook sailed in the Dardennelles through minefields just off the coast of Turkey, where he torpedoed and sank a Turkish battleship. He safely returned after staying submerged for a record 9 hours in a submarine with a normal battery life of just 2 hours. This town changed its name from Germanton to Holbrook in his honor.
Exploring the submarine that the town of Holbrook purchased after it was decommissioned by the Royal Australian Navy.
Our final stop on Day 1 was at our first accommodation. We booked a lot of our places through Airbnb and this was the only place that we were actually staying with the owner, kind of like a bed and breakfast, except we were the only guests. It was a bit awkward, but the place was great and the breakfast and lack of clean-up was a bonus! We enjoyed a pizza dinner in the town of Lavington (not much was open being it was Good Friday) and then called it a night!
