We had heard great things about the Salamanca Markets, so we planned our trip so that we would be here on a Saturday morning. They did not disappoint! The markets were huge, there was lovely entertainment, and yummy food!
The girls checking out the view from our room before packing up.
After the markets, we decided to try to do the cave tour and natural pool that we missed the day before even though it added 2 hours of driving time. The cave was nice, but Hallie was not digging it and only wanted her mama…who also happens to be the photographer…we ended up missing all of the discussion about the cave as Hallie did not like being with the group for some crazy reason!
After the cave tour, we headed for the pool and barbecues!
We had about a 4 hour drive from there to our next destination. Along the way, we experienced another “first” for us here in Australia…getting pulled over for a random breathalyzer check. They do these in Australia at such random times (like a Saturday afternoon for us) and thankfully Brian was good to go! We also saw our first wildlife (that was alive-holy cow is there a lot of road kill in Tasmania!)-a wallaby. We were so excited, but later realized just how many there were in the the state!
Before going to our lodging for the night, we headed to Bicheno in hopes of seeing some penguins coming back to shore from their day out fishing. We didn’t want to do the tour with young children…you are suppose to be quiet! So, we thought we’d go to an area that I had heard you might see 1 or 2. It was beautiful out there and the kids loved climbing on the rocks.

Beautiful sunset!
It was starting to get dark and we really didn’t even know where we should be looking or what we should see. We’d been out there for about an hour when a few others came down to the beach. We asked them about it and they said they heard they were down the beach further. We decided to follow them as a last ditch effort. We walked all the way to one point and decided to turn back, bummed that we hadn’t seen any when all of a sudden, Brian spotted one scurrying up the beach. We were so excited to have seen one, thinking that was it, when Brian looked and saw a TON in the water. Everywhere we looked up the shore, they were coming in! It was probably the coolest thing on our whole trip-absolutely amazing experience and we were SO lucky to see so many. We estimate that we saw at least 500!
Once we got back to our car, we continued to see them scurrying up the pathway and into the trees. They were so noisy communicating with each other and deciding where to go. We saw some along our drive to our cabin that night too!
