The next morning, Sudip & I went for run through the very poor streets of Siem Reap. It was very eye opening as we ran by feral dogs, families bathing in common water areas, heaps of rubbish piles, children playing in the dirt roads, and just the overall poverty. We did happen upon a tradition wedding procession, following the family through the streets to her groom. We went back to the hotel and enjoyed breakfast before getting picked up for our family cooking class.
On our way to the cooking class
This Aussie guy owns this hotel and has employed many Cambodians. He’s also opened up local schools and is doing what he can to help the Cambodian people.
Walking to our class, getting hydrated, then heading to a local home, checking out the vegetation on the way.
It was good for the kids (& us) to see how some people live and just how blessed we are. We walked around this home and explained to the kids how they lived compared to us. They enjoyed watching the 2 girls doing hair and being goofy.
Out front, the kids enjoyed pumping water and adding it to the well.
This family was presented with a parcel of rice for opening up their home to us.
Then it was back to start our cooking class which was amazing! Such beautiful, fresh food and delicious combinations. We all got into it and the kids lvoed being able to cook by themseleves too. We made Fresh Spring Rolls, Cambodian Curry, Khmer Mango Salad, and Banana Blossom Salad.
Finished products that we got to sit down to enjoy…we were all a bit full from snacking on our preparations, but got to take them back with us and had leftovers for dinner.
From our cooking class, we went back to the hotel for a quick swim and to get ready to head to the airport. Next stop, Vietnam!
